Thank you all, and hope this can help somebody else - or even the MS team no doubt desperately trying to get this installation fail-safe enough to roll out to a million users? About an hour later I then check the update history and see the failure code of This is after attempting switching off virus scanning, checking the harddrive and memory for errors and having rerun the process about 7 times, each with the same end result. I'm having the exact same problem and I wrote to Microsoft's Vista update help.
I got back an email saying I'd get a response in 24 business hours, but that has long passed. Has anyone found the answer to this? I only bought my new computer with Vista because they promised SP1 would fix the problems and XP would no longer be supported.
Now I can't even install SP1. I've now got a resolution to the specific prblem in my case with technical spport from Microsoft who did indeed get back to me fairly quickly. In my case the resolution was to wholly uninstall both Mcafee and Adaware with Mcafee being sited as the specific product causing the isue , switch off all services etc other than Microsoft services, download the full SP1 install and then re-attempt.
It was the uninstall of Mcafee that resolved the problem. Although the problem is now resolved thanks MS Support I think that the fact that SP1 and mcafee cant co-exist at install time and the way you lose an hour of install time and then a further hour of 'revert' time is pretty appalling.
I did let MS Support know that as well - they should really disable the update from being downloaded by Mcafee customers until such time as they resolve the issue by talking to Mcafee. Crazy really! Yes, reinstalling Mcafee was no problem, although a I'd bought it from Mcafee over the web it took a few minutes for their download software to work out I had uninstalled it, so there was a short period of time until it allowed me to re-download and install it.
