You may need to replace one or the other or both. Do a simple check to install the toners correctly in the printer. Make sure the toner is correctly sitting in the drum unit and that the drum unit is seated correctly in the printer. A simple reset is open cover the printer and turn off the printer. Remove all the Brother toner cartridges out of the printer. Give the printer a quick wipe and clean with a lint free or dust free cloth.

Then reinstall the toner cartridges in order with the black cartridge last. Turn your printer back on. The corona wire can become dirty with toner powder or general use. It can be cleaned simply by sliding the tab gently back and forth and can be wiped with a dust free cloth. Make sure the drum unit or the toner is also clean. Thanks, but what you have omitted to say is that the front cover should be open when you carry out this procedure to reset the drum unit counter. It could be the memory needs a reset and the best way to do that is to remove the drum and toner cartridges, power off the printer, unplug at the wall for 10 minutes, plug back in and switch on and reinstall toner and drum at the same time.

Do I really need to replace the drum if I get the message? My message started in May, it is now nearly Dec and the printer finally completely stopped and insists I replace the drum. However, the print quality has not yet declined. Can I reset the drum count and keep using the same drum until the print quality is actually becomes bad? Hi there, you would need to replace the drum with a new unit and then unplug the printer from the wall for 10 minutes and reboot.

So I tried yours and it does not work either. I am good until then, then they say: Press and hold pound on the touchpanel until the message on the display changes. I do not have that. Front door open or closed no difference to me. Normally removing the toner and drum and unplugging the printer for 10 minutes and then turning back on and reinstalling the drum and toner resets the printer memory and would get you up and running but it sounds like there could be more of a technical issue going on.

The only other thing you can try is to download and install the latest drivers and see if it fixes the issue. Please help! You can find more info on that here. The only thing you can try is either turn off the restriction and then try again or try the method to take out all cartridges and switch the printer off and pull socket out of the wall for 10 minutes, then reinstall everything.

I keep getting a replace toner message. I replaced the toner drum from the supplier and still get the message. I have tried unplugging and turning off and the counter reset to factory settings.

I still get the message. Is the toner definitely installed? I have replaced my drum and the message replace drum is still on. I have tried everything I can think of. A new drum cost more than a printer. My model is different from the ones you discuss.

Thank you, Jill. Any suggestions? Hi Vickie, I just read this on the Brother manual: The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. If it is not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

My printer does not have the keypad shown on some diagrams. How do I reset the counter? The print quality is faint when I print certain documents. Does this have anything to do with me using non-branded drum units? Hi Grace, it would normally be the drums at fault when you see faint print. Try printing each of the 4 colours separately and see if the faint print only occurs on one colour. That will let you know which one is causing the issue. I followed your instructions to Michael from a few weeks ago.

Then you say touch the until the touch screen message changes. I do not have a on my printer so the message does not change. What do you suggest? I got the instructions from the printer manual. Manuals lib have a very good website and have most printer manuals if you no longer have it. Is there a drum available for my unit and do you know the cost? I believe the drum unit you need is the DR You saved my bacon, printing order labels on Easter Sunday.

Could have been a ball ache. Thanks so much. Should I replace all 4 drum units at the same time? Is it possible or recommended to replace drum units one at a time. I have a Brother HL I have replaced the drum and am still getting this message.

Hi, I have the Brother HL I bought a new drum and it still says replace drum. I tried unplugging and replugging the printer, tried holding down GO for couple of seconds both when the cover was open and closed, and nothing helped.

Do you know how I address the problem with this unit I too have a Mac if that matters. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. I installed the new drum properly according to instructions. Thank you! Hi, you may need to clear down the memory. Power back on and re install everything. I just finished replacing all of my drum units and now continue to get an error message to prevent me from using the machine. Might you have any recommendations that would help me?

Hi Craig, reading up on the user manual the drum counter needs to be reset and the manual says there should have been instructions in the box with the new drum unit on how to do that.
